Appointments are limited-term and are designed for those who have recently received a doctorate. Appointments are made to academic departments with the approval of the department head and may require senior officer approval. Appointments are usually for not less than one term and are normally not renewed beyond a total of five years. This appointment is not intended for long-term, indefinite, or career appointments.

 

I. POSITION INFORMATION

 

Job Description Summary:
This postdoc will primarily engage in the Muon proton Scattering Experiment (MUSE), which takes place at the Paul Scherrer Institute in Switzerland. MUSE provides simultaneous measurement of elastic electron and muon scattering off the proton and investigates both charge states. This enables comparison of the cross sections and form factors, investigating two-photon effects and the proton charge radius in muons and electrons.
The selected candidate will provide on-site and remote expertise during periods of experimental running. They will lead aspects of the physics analysis of the experiment, engage in substantial analysis code development to ensure that the data taken is of the requisite quality, and participate in the publication of the physics analyses. They will also be responsible for implementing the MUSE data analysis software on GW’s high performance computing cluster to allow more efficient analysis. The selected candidate will participate
in the training and mentoring of undergraduate and graduate students performing analysis and contributing to experimental running. While their main focus will be on MUSE, they will also be able to contribute to the polarizability program at MAMI in Mainz, Germany in order to broaden their professional experience and network and support the experimental program there.

Minimum Qualifications
This position requires Ph.D. in public health or a related field (e.g., epidemiology, biostatistics, data science, etc.). A strong background in quantitative/qualitative methodology, writing, and engagement in self-directed and guided research are required. Ability to meet deadlines and efficiently multitask is also required.

Desired Qualifications:
Applicants must have fulfilled of all requirements for the award of a PhD or equivalent qualification in arelevant field by the date of employment.
Applicants with expertise in the execution and analysis of nuclear physics experiments will be preferred and are strongly encouraged to apply.
The initial appointment is for one year, with possible extensions for a second and third year depending on satisfactory performance and the availability of funding.
