The post-doctoral Research Scholar will engage with the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians (EBCI) tribal nation and other management entities to strengthen landscape scale conservation opportunities through clarifying understanding of EBCI and partner values and long-term risks to achieving natural resource management goals. The Post-doctoral will develop and analyze spatial resource models, improve spatial data management systems, and produce planning tools.

- Analyzing data and developing associated databases to conduct conservation modeling and produce planning and decision support tools.
- Using existing data sources and region-wide conservation strategy frameworks, in particular, the Southeast Conservation Adaptation Strategy (SECAS) and the associated Conservation Blueprint, to provide foundational information for an actionable conservation plan that centers on the values and priorities of Tribal citizens and other stakeholders.
- Designing engagement workshops with EBCI communities (e.g., Elder’s Advisory Board, Cherokee Speakers Consortium, Timber and Natural Resources Committee, etc.) and external partners (e.g., NPS, USFS, NC WRC, TNC) to elicit input to guide prioritization and disseminate mapping updates to the Conservation Blueprint.
- Identifying focal data and modeling needs to inform spatial and temporal prioritization of conservation actions.
- Assisting EBCI in the development of an integrated and spatially explicit database management system for the EBCI Natural Resources Department to monitor the implementation of priorities identified in this planning proposal.
- Assisting partners in integrating findings into EBCI planning documents.
Other Work/Responsibilities
The incumbent is expected to be able to travel (infrequently to regularly) to areas of the Qualla Boundary and beyond to meet with EBCI tribal members, staff of the EBCI Natural Resources Department, and partnering agencies and organizations.

- A Ph.D. in a relevant field of natural resource investigation and applied management.
- Expertise in spatial analytics of ecosystem and species dynamics.
- Expert command of Geographic Information Systems (GIS).
- Preference is given for experience or skills in project management, engagement with managers, stakeholder groups, and/or Native American tribes, and/or familiarity with the mission and goals of the Climate Adaptation Science Center Network (USGS).
