POSITION TITLE: Safety Technician - Radioactive & Hazardous Waste
POSITION SUMMARY:
Performs varied clerical and technical tasks in support of the department, specifically related to radioactive and hazardous waste, following internal procedures and external safety regulations.
RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES:
- Removes chemical and radioactive waste from labs and transports it to the processing facility;
- Processes and packages chemical waste (bulk and lab pack) for off-site disposal;
- Performs radioactive contamination surveys: selects surfaces to test, performs wipe tests and places wipe in scintillation counter for analysis, decontaminates facilities and equipment utilizing absorbent material and decontamination solutions, verifies successful decontamination;
- Operates and calibrates various monitoring instruments using a portable pulse generator and sealed radioactive check sources, and interprets measurements/findings;
- Processes incoming packages of radioactive materials, biological and/or controlled substances;
- Coordinates and performs lab/facility decommissioning and decontaminating;
- Maintains inventory of group supplies; replenishing as necessary;

REQUIREMENTS:
- High school diploma, GED, or equivalent combination of education, training and
- Minimum of 2 years environmental health and safety experience performing similar or related
- Bachelor's degree preferred, in a physical science or a related discipline, and may be considered in lieu of required experience.
- Demonstrated experience with Microsoft Office (word, Excel, Outlook, ).
- Effective verbal and written communication
- Must possess a valid driver's license issued by the state in which the position is located and posses a good driving record.
- Must be able to lift 70
- Must be able to wear an air purifying respirator.
- This is an on-campus position requiring 4 days per week working onsite from our La Jolla campus, with flexibility to work 1 day per week remotely from home.
COMPENSATON:
The expected hiring range for this position is $22.00/hourly to $27.50/hourly, commensurate with experience. Consideration will be given to experience that exceeds the listed requirements.
