The Counseling Center assists NC State students experiencing personal, academic or vocational problems. The goal of the Counseling Center is to provide students with professional counseling services and outreach to help them cope with issues that may impede successful academic performance.

The Counseling Center also offers crisis intervention and psychological/psychiatric assessment as well as consultation with others who have concerns about the mental/emotional state of NC State students. Our services are primarily short-term in nature and we make referrals to other helping professionals and community agencies as appropriate.

Essential Job Duties

The Assistant Director reports to the Executive Director of the Counseling Center and is required to perform administrative duties, provide direct service to students, consult with university faculty/staff, and participate in supervision and training. This person will assist in developing, revising, and maintaining policies and procedures to ensure adherence to best clinical practices, and legal and ethical codes. This person may be responsible for coordination of multidisciplinary teams/committees and will directly supervise a number of clinical staff (as assigned).

Assistant Directors will carry a reduced clinical load that may include walk- in/crisis assessment, after-hours on-call, individual, couples, and group psychotherapy, clinical consultation, outreach programming, and clinical supervision. There is an expectation that Assistant and Associate Directors assist in hiring, training, supervising and consulting with all clinical staff, including
trainees, as needed.

This staff member serves on the Administrative Team, along with the Director, Associate Director, and other Assistant Directors. The Assistant Directors will assume supervision of Counseling Center operations in the absence of the Director and Associate Director. Members of the Administrative Team will be expected to submit reports and/or data to the Director as requested and will serve on committees within and outside of the Center as required. Members of the Administrative Team are expected to support the Center’s mission and values. This position will have an emphasis on providing leadership and oversight of our Doctoral Psychology Interns

Duties and Responsibilities:

Generalist Counselor:
One full-time, 12 month position with responsibility to assist in all areas of
Counseling Center functioning including:
  • Individual and group counseling of NC State students/clients (personal, academic, and vocational assessment and counseling); psychological assessment; developmental and crisis counseling; couples counseling; evaluation of students for withdrawal from the University
  • Development and participation in Outreach programming
  • Consultation with faculty staff, parents, and others
  • Providing evaluations and recommendations regarding students with academic and conduct problems
  • Some participation in after hours “on call” and possible evening office hours
  • General administrative responsibilities
  • Clinical and administration supervision of the center’s Pre-Doctoral Psychology Internship program
  • Clinical and Administrative Supervision of the Center’s Doctoral Psychology

Internship Program, Training Responsibilities include:
  • Develop, organize and maintain a comprehensive clinical training program designed to meet the needs of Pre-doctoral Psychology Interns as well as the overall clinical needs of NC State Counseling Center.
  • Develop, implement and evaluate activities in a manner that is consistent with accreditation standards and other professional guidelines as set forth by the International Association of Counseling Services, the American Psychological Association and the Association of Counseling Center Training Agencies (ACCTA).
  • Keep current with policies, practices, legal and ethical standards in regard to the provision of clinical training.
  • Conduct evaluative reviews of the training curricula and implement appropriate changes and enhancements that satisfy accreditation requirements and the service needs of NC State Counseling Center.
  • Monitor expenditures incurred by the training and development programs and provide reports, as requested by the Executive Director.
  • Coordinate annual Pre-doctoral Intern selection process in compliance with Association of Psychology Postdoctoral and Internship Centers (APPIC) and the American Psychology Association (APA).
  • Organize and monitor the administrative aspects of supervision to interns and communicate relevant issues to the Executive Director as needed.
  • Communicate with Executive Director regarding trainee progress and development.
  • Collaborate with the Executive Director and other staff to insure the provision of high quality clinical supervision and evaluation of trainees.
  • Collaborate with other Assistant Director in order to integrate the Pre-Doctoral Internship into the overall Training program which includes trainees from different disciplines at all levels.
  • Coordinate remediation and due process procedures for externs and pre- doctoral interns and provide reports, as requested by the Executive Director.
  • Coordinate staff participation in training activities (e.g., group consult, training seminars and case conferences).
  • Participate in the coordination of needs assessment, strategic planning and outcome assessment for NC State Counseling Center’s Training Program.
  • Provide clinical supervision to trainees and unlicensed staff members (assume oversight and responsibility for each of the trainees’ clients).
  • Coordinate the training schedule for all doctoral-level interns.
  • Consult with administrative officials of various doctoral programs with regard to any trainees exhibiting difficulties in fulfilling their clinical or professional duties.
  • Conduct quarterly supervisory meetings with all trainees to assess progress and outcomes of their learning contract.
  • Manage program evaluation and assessment for the Center by maintaining strong metrics and assessment procedures and processes to assess the satisfaction and efficacy of the training program and clinical services, and collaborate with administrative staff to make adjustments as necessary.
  • Manage the annual and and ongoing evaluations and reports for the Doctoral Psychology Internship Program, including the annual APA CoA report, and the APPIC Self-Study and Site Visit
  • Co-facilitate the Center’s continuing education program with other training staff.
  • Maintain active memberships in relevant training professional organizations, including the American Psychological Association (APA), the Association of Counseling Center Training Agencies (ACCTA), and the Association of Psychology Postdoctoral and Internship Centers (APPIC).

Minimum Education and Experience

  • Ph.D. or Psy.D. in Clinical Psychology or Counseling Psychology.
  • State of North Carolina Licensed Clinical Psychologist or eligible to attain such licensure within six months of hire.
  • Three years post-doctoral experience in clinical or counseling psychology.
  • 2 years of progressive administrative experience preferably in the training and supervision of practicum students and interns in support of University counseling services within a higher education environment.

Other Required Qualifications

  • Commitment to multicultural competencies, strong clinical skills, experience handling crisis situations, strong interpersonal skills, experience in a college counseling setting.
  • Ability to work effectively and collaboratively as part of a cohesive team-oriented environment.
  • Knowledge of legal and ethical issues in supervision and training.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Graduation from a doctoral program fully accredited by the American Psychological Association.
  • Completion of a Pre-doctoral Internship at a site approved by the American Psychological Association or the Association of Psychology Postdoctoral and Internship Centers.
  • Prior demonstrated leadership in the coordination and implementation of an APA accredited Pre-Doctoral Internship.
  • Experience utilizing a time-limited model of care.
  • A minimum of five years post-licensure experience and a minimum of three years of demonstrated administrative and leadership/supervisory experience, preferably in a large university counseling center.
  • Experience with program development and evaluation preferred.
