Do you want to design and develop algorithms for sensor systems that support the Navy’s forward fleet?

Are you in search of an exciting summer filled with learning and applying mathematical modeling and algorithm implementation skills to solve maritime-based electronic warfare (EW), radar, RF, or remote sensing challenges?

If so, this intern position is right for you!

The Electromagnetic Systems Group is seeking a motivated and curious intern to conduct research, modeling and simulation, and analysis to support development of robust maritime algorithms and software prototypes. Bring your experience and knowledge of engineering, physics, mathematics, and computer science to join our cross-disciplinary team in creating innovative approaches that revolutionize defensive capabilities for the U.S.!

As a member of our team, you will...

  • Contribute to the research and development of high-quality algorithms
  • Work with a team to analyze data and results from simulation or real data to evaluate algorithmic and system performance, and identify root causes and understand trends
  • Work with a team to develop, model, and test algorithms in Matlab, Python, or C++
  • Work with algorithm developers, engineers, domain experts, and software developers to understand the physics, functionality, and application of existing maritime solutions
  • Give a final presentation to internal staff at the end of your internship
  • Learn a lot and have fun!

Qualifications

You meet our minimum qualifications for the job if you...

  • Are pursuing a Bachelor's or Master's degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, Physics, Mathematics, or similar degrees
  • Have experience in MATLAB, C++, Python, or Java (or another high-level language)
  • Are able to work independently and collaboratively with excellent verbal/written communication skills
  • Have a minimum 3.0 GPA on a 4.0 scale. Note: When prompted to upload attachments, please include a copy of your college transcripts (unofficial transcripts are acceptable).
  • Are able to obtain an Interim Secret level security clearance by your start date and can ultimately obtain Secret level clearance. If selected, you will be subject to a government security clearance investigation and must meet the requirements for access to classified information. Eligibility requirements include U.S. citizenship.

 

You'll go above and beyond our minimum requirements if you...

  • Have understanding of signal processing, detection theory, pattern recognition, or communication systems
  • Have experience with EW systems, RF equipment and technologies, or other sensor systems and applications
  • Have developed mathematical algorithms or developed moderately scaled software products
  • Are familiar with the full life-cycle of software development: software design & architecture, coding standards, configuration management systems (Git), software testing, and quality assurance
  • Have experience documenting and supporting technical analysis and assessments with strong attention to detail

The referenced pay range is based on JHU APL’s good faith belief at the time of posting. Actual compensation may vary based on factors such as geographic location, work experience, market conditions, education/training and skill level with consideration for internal parity. For salaried employees scheduled to work less than 40 hours per week, annual salary will be prorated based on the number of hours worked. APL may offer bonuses or other forms of compensation per internal policy and/or contractual designation. Additional compensation may be provided in the form of a sign-on bonus, relocation benefits, locality allowance or discretionary payments for exceptional performance. APL provides eligible staff with a comprehensive benefits package including retirement plans, paid time off, medical, dental, vision, life insurance, short-term disability, long-term disability, flexible spending accounts, education assistance, and training and development.
